I could of never thought that letting my hair grow would change the relationship between me and my mom. I was fifteen with my spiky porky pine looking like hair when it came to me at the blink of an eye. It was a Sunday morning coming out of church, going back home with my mom. As we stopped at the red light that's when it hit me, it had came to my head how I would look with long hair. I pulled down the visor and opened the mirror. I tried to imagine myself with different types of long hair as I squinted my eyes. It was hard imagining me with long hair because I had never had hair longer than my pinky.
"Mom, I wanna let my hair grow, super long though, longer then yours."
"Are you crazy?" she asked me as she stepped on the brake pedal.
"Yea, I'm crazy for you," I told her with a really big smile on my face. "If you let me let my hair grow, I'll love you more than I did yesterday" I was waiting for her to tell me yes with that.
"No, you'll look ugly and like a girl, I have a son not a daughter!" I looked at her and she started laughing as she was parking the car.
We got out the car, walked to the front steps and opened the door. We went inside the house, and the first thing I did when I stepped in the house was go up to my dad and told him to tell my mom to let me grow out my hair..
"Hahaha que?" he asked me.
"Don't you think I should change my hair style?" I turned to my mom and back to my dad.
My sister's voice comes out in the silence. "Cut it in a different way then, you idiot!"
"Shut up! Just because I already have more hair than what you do, don't mean you have to hate on me," I screamed back at her. her.
"Shut up!" she said
"Be quiet!" my mom screamed at us. I looked at my mom with a sad face and puppy eyes and told her to let me let my hair grow or else I would cry.
"Didn't you have long hair when you were my age?" I asked my dad. He told me that his hair was longer then my moms and anyone else he knew.
"Don't you think it would be cool if I let my hair grow just like you had it? I would look just as fine as you did" I lied to him to see if he would actually say yes.
He told my mom to let me let it grow to see how I would look. I didn't think it would work but it did. My mom just looked at me with an evil face wanting to tell me something but she just kept it to herself. I told them how everyone was going to be jealous of my hair because it would be better then theirs.
"Go do your homework," she told me.
"Anything for you, my precious little cupcake," I told her with a smile. I went to my room to do my homework. The next day at school I told everyone how I was going to let my hair grow. Most people were happy and excited, and some others told me that I shouldn't because I wouldn't look good. I told everyone who disagreed with me that I am going to show them how everyone is going to love my hair and not want me to cut it ever in my life.
As the days went on, the night kept getting longer and slower. Sooner then I could imagine, my hair was finally for the first time in my life longer then my pinky. I was shocked on how fast it was growing but also very excited at the same time. But my mom on the other hand didn't know what to think about my spiky thick hair. Every morning while taking me to school she would always tell me that my hair looks more horrible as the days pass by. I would get tired of repeating myself but I would tell her anyway that I knew it did and to not worry because when it would get longer it would look way better. She would always say ok but with a look on her face like if she doubted me.
While I was walking to class I was trying to think of what was in her mind trough out the whole ride to school, but nothing came to my head so I just left it. While I was in my math class sitting and looking around the room, I had spaced out for a little. As I was spaced out I had noticed that I was communicating with my mom more than I ever did before. I would always see her as just my mom, the person who takes me to school and picks me up, and cooks for the family when it is time to eat. I then realized that my mom was always there for me when I needed something, and she would always help me with anything and she would do it with a positive attitude. I also noticed that she was my best friend my whole life but I didn't even know. I would of never thought that spacing out in class would actually do something good for me.
The same day after school when my mom picked me up I asked her how was her day and what did she do. She looked at me with a blank face and told me that it was a miracle that I asked her that because I had never asked her that before. I looked at her, lifted my shoulders and smile. She told me that it was just a normal day for her, taking care of my little cousins. She said that those little devils are the worst little three year olds she has seen in her life. I asked her why is she taking care of them, and she said because we needed the money. I just stood quiet while I looked out the window.
"Lets go to Denny's tomorrow morning, its on me ok," I told her unexpectedly.
"You taking me out to eat at Denny's? Oh my god, is it the end of the world or what?" she asked me with the most surprised face I seen in my life.
"No it is not the end of the world, I just thought I should take you out to eat to thank you for everything you've done for me," I replied.
"What have I done for you to take me out unexpectedly?" she asked me with a really shocked face.
"You have done everything you could for me, you have risked your life just to have me and raise me with all of your heart and soul. So I just wanted to thank you in the best way that I could," I told her.
"Okay, if you want to take me out then that's fine with me," she told me. The look in her face made me feel really good inside, and made me smile.
That same Friday when we got home I did all of my homework so I could have the whole weekend for fun. When I finished my homework I played my play station for about an hour. After I turned off the game and went to bed. It took me a while before I went to sleep because I kept on thinking about what I was going to order the next day at Denny's. I just told myself that I would see what they had then I would get what I wanted and went to bed.
The next morning I woke up at about nine o'clock and noticed that my mom wasn't watching her favorite morning show so I thought that she was still asleep. So I went to her room and woke her up and told her to get up before more people get to Denny's and there would be no more tables for us. She got up and went to the bathroom so she can take a shower. While she was in the shower I turned on the television in the living room to watch the soccer games that were on. As soon as she was done taking a shower a grabbed the car keys and ran to the car. She walked outside locked the doors and went to the car. She turned on the car, and while the car was warming up I asked her if she was ready to get so full that her stomach would explode. She looked at me and said, "oh yea". she put the car on drive and we took off.
We arrived at Denny's and told my mom to hurry up and find a parking. Once she parked I ran out and entered the restaurant. There were not too many people in line yet so I was relieved. I waited for my mom while I was in line. Once my mom got there the lady that worked there asked me "how many?" I told her that it was two of us. She grabbed two menu's and attended us to a table for two people. As soon as we got the menu's we knew what we wanted. We both got an all American slam. While we were waiting for our food she told me that she was shocked because of everything I have told her and done all week. I told her that I had realized what she has done for me so I tried to give her a good time. She just looked at me and smiled. About fifteen minutes later we got our food and we both grabbed our spoon and forks and started to eat.
We both were enjoying the food so much that we stood quiet until we finished eating. Once we were done I asked her if the food was good, and she told me that it tasted better than all the other times she had ate there. I told her that it was good because I had bought it for her. When we finished eating I went up to the cash register and paid with my own money that I had been saving for a new video game that was going to come out. once I paid me and my mom went back to the car and went home. We were both so full that when we got home we went to our rooms and took a really nice and long nap.
Ever since those days that we were arguing about letting my hair grow or not we have gotten along better than ever. We talk and treat each other as if we were best friends and nothing has changed since that moment. We told each other that from that moment on our relationship would get better and better as long as we both live. So when I need help with something I go straight to her and ask her for help and she helps me with no type of problem. She also always tells me how much she loves my hair just like how everyone else loves it, and she tells me how to take care of it. I had never thought that something that didn't even involve her would make our friendship perfect, so because of that my life and how I think of it has changed and there is still a lot of my life to go with my best friend to go, my mom.
