It Ain't Over 'Till It's Over
by Noah Isaacs
Once upon a time two teams met
For a baseball series no one would forget.
Boston versus New York, a ball player’s dream,
A lopsided match-up, or so it would seem.
The Sox were cursed, hadn’t won since 1918,
The Yankees had won more than any other team.
Both teams stood ready on chalk foul lines,
One in blue, one in red, one thing on their minds.
“Oh Say Can You See” rung loudly in their ears.
The crowd went quiet, then roared with cheers.
The Yanks took the field beneath dark skies,
Confidence on their face, and fire in their eyes.
“We’re going to crush them,” the Yankees said.
So the first game went their way, but no red sox hung his head.
“We lost one, but it aint over, not yet.
Six more games to play, that’s nothing, don’t worry, don’t fret.”
The final score was ten to seven and the Yankees cheered loudly.
Without a word, not even a pip, the Red Sox stood proudly.
That night they went home to their beds and rested.
For the next day would be big, and their strength would be tested.
The next morning both teams awoke with baseball in their hearts.
They stretched their necks, legs, and arms, making sure all were working parts.
They got to the stadium at a quarter to four.
The players played catch and stretched some more.
They entered the dugout and grabbed some seeds,
Some bubble gum, and water to please all their needs.
“Hey Red Sox, we can win if we play hard and have fun!”
But the final score that night was Yankees three, Red Sox one.
“We played hard and had fun, and we’ll get them tomorrow,”
The Red Sox went home without pain or sorrow.
The next three games were played at Fenway Park.
The Green monster smiled as the Red Sox waved in the dark.
“Tonight’s our night, this is a must win game.”
But game one, two and three, were one and the same.
The Red Sox had lost three games in a row.
No team had ever won after being down three oh.
The Red Sox weren’t worried, the series wasn’t done.
There was at least one more game, and the Yankees hadn’t won.
As impossible as it seemed, the Red Sox still had a shot,
One in a hundred, one in a million, one in a lot.
“It aint over ’till it’s over,” as the Yankees always say,
But they had forgotten their saying after the events of the day.
“We lost three, but it aint over, not yet.
Four more games to win, that’s nothing, don’t worry, don’t fret.”
And so game four started just as the others had begun.
Again the Yankees were the first to score a run.
The Red Sox started the ninth down to their final three outs.
The field was filled with hometown cheers and shouts.
The Sox scored one in the ninth to tie the game.
From that moment on history would never be the same.
They scored two more in the twelfth to seal the deal.
The Sox weren’t giving up. This team was for real.
Boston won game four, but the Yanks were still ahead.
“It aint over till it’s over,” the Red Sox said.
Game five was long and went deep into the night,
Both teams fought hard, using all their mite.
The game was tied in the fourteenth inning,
When all was said and done, the Sox ended up winning.
The final score was five to four,
But the Sox had to win two games more.
The final two games were to be played in New York City,
But game six for the Yanks wasn’t that pretty.
The Yankees lost four to two.
It was at that moment the Red Sox knew,
They were capable of being heroes,
No team had ever come back from three games to zero.
They had been down, but now they were tied,
Now it seemed that the baseball gods were on their side.
This was it, the end of the fight,
A winner would be crowned at the end of the night,
Once upon a time a curse was broken,
History was mad, and a champion awoken.
Ten to three, the Sox won game seven,
A gift from god, a blessing from heaven.
After beating the Yanks, the Sox had momentum.
They were going to win it all, nothing could prevent’em.
Finally, after 86 years,
The Red Sox’ eyes filled with joyful tears.
They won it all, done the implausible.
It aint over ’till it’s over, any thing is possible.
