Background:

Leorah Abouav-Zilberman has spent most of her life here in the Bay Area (although she is a naturalized American born in Israel who is bicultural and bilingual).  She graduated from Lowell High School in San Francisco (’69) and went on to complete her B.A.(’73) and first teaching credential at UC Berkeley (’74).  Mrs. Abouav-Zilberman attended SFSU where she received her Learning Specialist Credential (’75).  Over the years, she added a Severely Handicapped Credential, a Secondary Social Science Credential, and a Supplemental mathematics authorization as well as an M.A. in counseling psychology from University of Santa Clara (’90).  She not only enjoys teaching, but also enjoys learning, too.

Mrs. “Z,” as most students and parents like to call her, began teaching in 1975 and begins her 26th year in the classroom this fall. Mrs. "Z" has taught 13 years in special education, 3 years in elementary education, and 10 years in middle school education. Mrs.”Z” has been an undergraduate instructor for the University of Phoenix for the past 3 years in addition to her day job.

Mrs. “Z” lives in Berkeley with her husband and three sons.  The boys are now away at school, having all finished BHS (Shie '97, Aytan and Eyal ’99).  She loves to crochet, read, dance and has an eclectic taste in music.  Mrs. “Z” is an avid walker and can be found pounding the pavements of Berkeley in the company of her Giant Schnauzer, Sheba and Wheaton Terrier, Cleo.

Favorite Motto:  "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day.  Teach a man to fish, and he can fish for life."
